Recycle & Repurpose Your Scrap Metal

Recycle & Repurpose Your Scrap Metal
Tell me about it
Don’t know what to do with your old jewellery or scrap silver? Let’s turn it into something useful!
In this hands-on Taster Experience at Vanilla Ink CIC in Glasgow, you’ll learn how to melt, refine, and repurpose your own metal, transforming scrap into fresh, workable material ready for your next project.
With metal prices on the rise, knowing how to reuse what you already have is a powerful skill. We’ll take you through the full process, from testing and preparation right through to melting, pouring, and forming, giving your old scrap a brand new lease of life.
Can I do this class?
Absolutely. This class is open to all levels, whether you’re a complete beginner or a practising jeweller looking to become more self-sufficient at the bench.
If you’ve got scrap metal and want to understand how to use it properly, this is the class for you.
What happens?
You’ll be introduced to the key techniques of metal recycling and refining, including:
Testing and identifying different types of silver
Understanding what can [and can’t] be melted together
Preparing and seasoning your crucible
Melting and pouring your metal safely
Rolling, shaping, and forming your new material
The morning focuses on demonstration and understanding the process, before moving into hands-on making in the afternoon, where you’ll melt and work your own silver.
Do I need to bring anything?
If you have scrap silver, please bring it along, this is your chance to give it a new life.
If you don’t have any scrap but are keen to learn the process, just get in touch and we can talk through your options.
This class includes a 2” crucible, which you’ll season during the session and take home with you.
Please tie back long hair, avoid open-toed shoes, and wear fitted clothing. If you need glasses for close-up work, bring them along, as this is detailed [and occasionally fiery] work 🔥
