Step into the world of ancient Korean metalwork and learn the stunning art of Keum-Boo [also Geumbu, Kum-Boo or Kum-bu, literally meaning “attached gold”]. This gilding technique fuses thin sheets of gold onto fine silver using heat and pressure, creating shimmering, silver-gilt jewellery with breathtaking texture and contrast.

Join us at Vanilla Ink CIC in Glasgow for a hands-on class where you’ll make your own collection of Keum Boo jewellery, experimenting with textures, patterns, and forms as you go. It’s a fascinating process that’s equal parts ancient, scientific, and utterly beautiful.

Can I do this class?

Absolutely. Keum Boo is a brilliant experience for both beginners and experienced jewellers. If you’re new to making, you’ll be amazed at how achievable this technique is. If you’re already a maker, it’s an incredible skill to add to your creative toolkit. Either way, prepare to be wowed.

What happens?

You’ll learn how to:

• Saw, solder, and roll-print texture onto silver

• Apply gold leaf using heat and pressure to achieve the Keum Boo bond

• Experiment with composition, pattern, and finishing techniques

Each participant receives silver and gold leaf to create a set of unique jewellery pieces, whether that’s a pendant, earrings, or pin. Watching gold fuse to silver right before your eyes? It’s extremely awesome.

Do I need to bring anything?

Bring a sketchbook or something for taking notes etc. Everyone will have their own bench with access to all the tools and materials required to make the pendant. You won’t need anything else as we provide the equipment needed for this session.

Please wear long hair tied up [or bring something to do so], don’t wear open-toed shoes and keep loose-fitting clothing to a minimum.

If you need glasses to see things close up, please bring them with you. Making jewellery is fiddly and this class requires a fair bit of close-up work!
