Tell me about it

Be honest - no matter where you’ve learned, did anyone really teach you finishing? Thought not. Most makers rely on the tumble polisher and hope for the best. But there’s so much more to it than that!

In this full-day Pro Class at Vanilla Ink CIC in Glasgow, we’ll show you how to finish like a pro, unlocking the techniques that transform rough metal into professional, show-stopping jewellery. You’ll learn how to achieve a flawless high polish, beautiful matte, satin, or oxidised finish, and truly understand what makes a piece feel finished.

But first things first: finishing is not the same as polishing. The art begins long before a mop or compound touches your metal. This class digs into the theories, tools, and processes that lead to consistently perfect results.

Can I do this class?

This class spans both amateur and professional jewellers who already know their way around the bench. You’ll need a solid understanding of basic jewellery-making, as after all, you have to make it before you can finish it! If you’re ready to take your craft to the next level, this is where it happens.

What happens?

You’ll learn how to:

  • File pieces cleanly and correctly

  • Use emery, sandpaper, and silicone wheels effectively

  • Finish using both pendant drill and polishing motor

  • Create emery sticks and learn how to burn in mops

  • Achieve high polish, satin, matte, and oxidised finishes

  • Apply pro-level tips to perfect your work

This is a hands-on, practical deep dive into the art of refinement, where the difference between “handmade” and “hand-finished” truly shines.

Do I need to bring anything?

Bring a sketchbook for notes and ideas. All materials and tools are provided, and everyone has their own fully equipped bench.

Please tie back long hair, avoid open-toed shoes, and wear fitted clothing. You’ll be using pendant motors and polishing machines, so that floaty shirt you wore to the dancing might not be the best choice.

If you need glasses for close-up work, don’t forget them, as finishing jewellery is detailed business.
