So, you’ve ticked most of the boxes, now you’re ready to push your skills even further. Of course you are! Welcome to Skilled Stone Setting, the next step in your setting journey at Vanilla Ink CIC in Glasgow.

This class is all about precision, patience, and next-level results. You’ll build on your existing experience to master micro-claw [castle and fishtail] and channel setting. Sure, it’s detailed work, but it’s also seriously satisfying - few things compare to the feeling of nailing that perfect, professional finish.

You’ll be guided every step of the way by a Master Goldsmith and Setter, with clear demonstrations, focused coaching, and plenty of hands-on time to refine your technique and gain real confidence.

Can I do this class?

This weekend is designed for experienced jewellers who already have a solid grasp of benchwork and intermediate setting skills. You’ll need strong control with your pendant motor, a steady hand for drilling and burring, and some familiarity with scorpers.

It’s ideal for those who’ve completed our Intermediate Stone Setting [Flush & Pavé] or have equivalent experience. Not sure if you’re there yet? Drop us a message and we’ll help you figure out the best fit for your skill level.

What happens?

Day 1 – Micro-Claw Setting [Castle & Fishtail]

• Castle-set five 3mm stones into a bar

• Explore decorative cutting and finishing techniques to master the fishtail look

Day 2 – Channel Setting

• Learn to channel-set round stones with precision

• Learn to channel-set square stones cleanly and securely

While it might not look like much on paper, these techniques demand focus, preparation, and accuracy. You’ll spend time understanding how to remove just the right amount of metal, creating settings that are both elegant and rock-solid.

By the end of the weekend, you’ll have advanced your technical ability, refined your control, and built skills that will set your work apart.

Do I need to bring anything?

Bring a sketchbook or similar for taking notes. Please note that glasses/optivisors are mandatory for this class [get in touch if you’re unsure]. Please wear long hair tied up [or bring something to do so], don’t wear open-toed shoes and keep loose-fitting clothing to a minimum.

We will provide all materials, which include metal and stones. You will each have your own bench where we have access to all of our essential stone setting tools but do feel free to bring your own if you are more comfortable.
