You can make jewellery… you can design jewellery… but can you draw jewellery? Most of us can’t, and that’s exactly why this weekend exists.

In this immersive two-day workshop, you’ll learn how to turn your ideas into clear, professional jewellery drawings that communicate form, stone cuts, colour and light with confidence. Whether you want to show clients what their finished piece will look like, develop your design language, or simply boost your creativity, this class gives you the foundations to draw jewellery beautifully and accurately.

Working with jeweller and designer Nor Clifford, you’ll explore techniques used across the industry, from scaled technical drawings to traditional gouache rendering. By the end of the weekend you’ll have polished examples of your work, and a brand-new skill you can keep developing at home.

CAN I DO THIS CLASS?

Absolutely! This class is for everyone. Whether you’re a practising jeweller, a hobbyist, or someone who struggles to draw a straight line, you’re welcome here.

Nor will guide you step by step, helping you build confidence in your drawing, understand good design principles, and create polished renderings of your own ideas. No previous drawing or design training is required, just curiosity and a willingness to learn.

WHAT HAPPENS?

Across the weekend you’ll develop practical design and rendering skills used by jewellers, goldsmiths and designers worldwide. You’ll learn how to:

• Draw a variety of faceted stone cuts

• Map out and draw a scaled ring in three views, using compasses, rulers and templates

• Create a design suitable for full rendering

• Render different types of stones including cabochons [translucent + opaque], faceted stones, diamonds, melee stones, channel-set square cuts, pearls and more

• Control your gouache and watercolour, including brush care, paint consistency, mixing and troubleshooting small smudges

• Make protective paper jackets for rendering

• Begin metal rendering in gouache, covering claws, wires, curved surfaces and clean polished bands

• Render and finish your own jewellery design

The weekend is packed with demonstrations, guided practice and one-to-one support, all in a relaxed, encouraging environment.

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?

Nope, we’ve got you covered here. We will provide all the equipment needed for this weekend, but if you already have some kit that you’re familiar with, then please bring it with you.

WHO IS TEACHING ME?

Eleanor Clifford has been part of the Vanilla Ink CIC guest tutor team for a number of years now, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome her back!

Nor entered the jewellery world at just sixteen and went on to graduate from the Birmingham School of Jewellery in 2017. She now works as a Goldsmith/Designer for a family jeweller in Hampshire, balancing her love of fine craftsmanship with her passion for traditional illustration.

Over the years, Nor has developed a distinctive rendering style using gouache and watercolour, mediums she not only works with professionally but collects obsessively. Her teaching is warm, patient and deeply knowledgeable, making her a brilliant guide for anyone wanting to improve their jewellery drawing skills.
