Skills Development: The Beating Heart of the INKubator
When we redesigned and relaunched the INKubator Programme a few years back, we decided to rip up the old blueprint and start again. With a bigger, brighter, better team at Vanilla Ink CIC, we went back to what really matters - skill.
We’re a skills academy first and foremost. We teach jewellery to everyone, from absolute beginners to seasoned pros looking to sharpen their craft. Our classes are rooted in traditional goldsmithing, where ancient techniques meet modern creativity. From day one, you’re at the bench, hands on, learning the skills that matter.
The INKers Studio
So when it came to the INKubator, we flipped the script. Instead of skills development being a side element, we made it the beating heart of the Programme. After all, what’s the point in being Scotland’s biggest independent jewellery school if our flagship programme doesn’t focus on good old-fashioned bench skills?
The INKubator is now built entirely around proper goldsmithing practice, with us teaching you to design and create beautiful, meaningful pieces from scratch. By the end of your ten months, you’ll not only know how to make jewellery, you’ll understand it. How far you take it is entirely up to you.
That’s quite a list, eh?
Led by our Master Goldsmith and Setter [a man who’s definitely not old, grizzled, or writing this blog, by the way], the Programme flows gently through a carefully planned curriculum. We start with the fundamentals, like polishing, finishing, and bezel setting, and gradually progress to advanced techniques like channel setting and mount making.
And we don’t just teach setting; we teach everything that supports it. You’ll learn how to create settings from scratch, craft different ring shanks, sharpen your own tools, test and identify metals, and refine your precision as a goldsmith. We don’t do shortcuts. We teach you to build, to think, and to make like a true craftsperson.

From benchpeg to camera to TV screen
Class sizes are deliberately small [limited to just ten INKers] so everyone gets the attention and space they need. You’ll work in our purpose-built studios, moving between the INKers’ Studio and School One depending on the session. Our high-end camera setup lets you see every detail of each demonstration on our big monitor, so you never miss a thing. Whether you’re watching up close or on screen, you’ll always have the best view in the house.
Every session is supported by full digital class notes and resources, so you can keep practising at your own bench and build your confidence between sessions.

The INKubator is stacked with everything you need to become a complete goldsmith - skills, support, tools, materials, and knowledge. All you need to bring is your time, dedication, and a whole lot of practice. You’ll only ever get out what you put in.
