I have secured a commission to create platinum wedding and engagement rings for a couple. They have approved the designs and everything is fine, but they have specified that they would like to be assured that the platinum has been extracted in an enviromentally friendly way. I was planning to have the rings cast so have been researching companies but a little unsure if platinum is ethically sourced at all?

I contacted Weston Beamor as they are fairtrade/fairmined certified but they only have 18ct yellow or white gold available which they can assure is ethical.

Does anyone have any info on this subject? Perhaps researched as part of a dissertation or come accross similar situations themselves?

Thanks, Zoe

Via Aubin Stewart: "In my day job I do lots of bespoke wedding ring designs/pricing and enquiries, I have been asked this on several occasions, could be tricky one. Cooksons said recently that they were planning to launch ethical bullion and on a recent channel 4 documentary about ethical gold a french businessman was smelting only recycled metals to provide authentic ethical bullion to jewellers. You could try http://www.channel4.com/programmes/dispatches/episode-guide/series-94/episode-1looking at this programme to find out who the guy was that was doing it, it looked pretty professional - dunno if they did platinum but worth look see. Otherwise the origin in pretty much untraceable. Good luck!"
